Facebook F8: the day after

In his keynote at the F8 conference CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled some major changes for Facebook. The biggest announcement? Timeline.

Story telling
Timeline is a serious re-imagining of user profiles that basically is a home for all the stories and pictures you’ve shared on your profile. Timeline is more visual than the old profile and the ‘cover’ of this profile is a giant photo. As you scroll down your new profile, you’ll see things you’ve put on Facebook – like posts, photos and events – as it happened in time. In your private activity log, you can find everything you shared since you joined Facebook. From here, you select posts, photos and events to feature on your timeline. You can also add parts of your story on your timeline when you miss an important piece, star your favorites or hide things.

Branding actions
A whole new feauture – also to be presented on your timeline – is a social app in which you can show the things you like to do like music you listen to, the runs you take, recipes you try and more.

This is how social apps will be used in the future:

Facebook will be all about branding actions. For marketers, this change means that they’ll have to come up with new contect to integrate themselves further into consumers’ lives. It now is no longer most important that people ‘like’ a brand, but that people ‘use’ a brand. Whether you like the new feature or not, it will definitely open up a lot of new, great opportunities for brands.
